People have been carving pumpkins or jack o’ lanterns for centuries. According to the folk tale, the man Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have some drinks and Jack didn’t want to pay for his drink so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so he could use it to pay. The devil did but Jack kept the money so the devil could not turn himself back. Eventually, Jack freed the devil in the condition that he will not bother Jack for one year. He pulled other tricks on the devil.

When Jack died, God did not allow Jack into heaven and the devil would not let him in hell either. Instead, he sent Jack out into the night with only a burning coal to light his way.
