With the threat of fossil fuels running out looming over us, we wold do well to look for alternative, renewable sources of energy to rely on in the future. To our knowledge, there is no other reliable source of renewable energy than our own sun. Solar energy is the cleanest, inexhaustible source of energy that human beings can rely on at this point in time, although the cost of setting up such a system might be off-putting to some.

It has to be said that solar energy is not only free to harness, but it is also available widely, produces literally no pollution whatsoever, no noise, no emissions of any kind, and no carbon footprint whatsoever. Like we said, however, the cost of setting up a solar energy system with solar panels and all the hardware that go along with them is quite high. So high, unfortunately, that even the most conscientious of people will sometimes stray off from the path of solar energy because of it.

The Pros

Solar power technology is constantly improving as a science and we will definitely experience major breakthroughs in this department over the next few years. Given how reliant we are on fossil fuels, it is in out best interest to at least give solar energy a try if possible or at least try and educate ourselves on the matter before making any decisions on whether it is feasible or not. 1. It is a renewable source of energy

There will always be solar energy as long as the sun exists, meaning that unless some catastrophe of universal proportions happens, solar energy is a fully renewable source. This being said, it is fairly obvious that solar energy cannot be produced during the night or cloudy days but it is a perfect solution for getting electricity in remote areas.

2. It is low maintenance

Due to the fact that solar cells require very little or no maintenance whatsoever, solar energy requires very little effort from your part. Furthermore, you can always add more solar panels to the ones you’ve already installed to boost the amount of energy to harness at all times. It has to be said however that solar panels do have an initial cost that can be quite expensive depending on the type of panels and where you get them from.

3. No pollution of any kind

Interestingly enough, solar energy is a non-polluting, clean, and reliable source of electricity that poses no threat on the environment whatsoever. Unlike other sources of energy that release carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide, or nitrogen oxide, solar energy is 100% clean.

4. Long lasting solar cells

Just like the panels, solar cells require no maintenance whatsoever, lasting a very long time until exhaustion. Furthermore, due to the fact that they contain no moving parts of any kind, solar cells make literally no noise, providing cost effective electricity with very little effort from your part.

5. Easy to install

We already spoke about how little maintenance solar panels require, well they are also quite easy to install as well. They require no wires, power sources, or cords, and unlike wind or geothermal power stations, solar panels can be installed anywhere quite easily. By positioning them in order, they require no large scale installations, leaving a lot of usable space available after being put in place.

The Cons

Unfortunately, there are also a few disadvantages to solar energy, disadvantages that although may seem negligible to some, are considered off-putting by others. The cost of setting up a solar energy system are quite high for some people, along with the fact that solar panels are only effective at times when the sun in visible. Therefore, here are some disadvantages to having a solar energy system in place.

1. Reliability

The most obvious reason for why solar energy isn’t all that reliable is the fact that solar panels only work during the day. Furthermore, each and every single time the weather takes a turn for the worse, you will have to rely on a local power grid for your electrical needs. So if you’re living in an area with cloudy weather, you can expect do use your local power grid a lot more than your solar panels, rendering them useless.

2. Solar panels take up space

Although home users may find a place for a few solar panels given how little energy a simple household needs, small and large companies alike are better off using traditional power grids rather than pretentious solar panels. Also, some areas are filled with vegetation, meaning that your regular solar panel will undoubtedly be blocked off by trees or plants, making it very hard for you to find a good place for the solar panels in order for them to be effective.

3. Inefficiency

Interestingly enough, no all light from the sun is absobved by your regular solar panels, meaning that almost all of them have a 40% efficiency rate when converting sunlight into electricity no matter what. Newer technologies do in fact work around the issue, increasing the output to almost 90%, but they are also quite expensive when compared with traditional solar panels.


All things considered, it will become imperative for future generations to find better energy sources once fossil fuels run out. Why not, maybe solar energy will one day power our communities once the technology to do so becomes available. For the time being, however, you would do well to consider your location, how much electricity you require, and how much money you have to spend before investing into solar panels.
