When we hear people talk about computers, we almost immediately think about our MACs and PCs, the only computers most of had a chance to interact with. Given how fast technology is progressing, computers find themselves at the core of most industries, communities, or businesses we interact with on a daily basis. Some computers, however, do more than help operators with their jobs. These supercomputers were designed to handle billions of inputs every second, and are using hundreds, sometimes even thousands of cores. Here is a list of the 10 most powerful supercomputers in the world at the moment.
10Super MUC, Germany
The Leibniz supercomputing center in Germany houses the tenth most powerful supercomputer in the world, the SuperMUC. With 150,000 processing cores, this supercomputer is able to perform at 2.9 petaflops. Currently, the SuperMUC is the second and third fastest computer in Germany and Europe respectively. This supercompter’s brain is sufficiently protected from frying by a new hot-water cooling system. IBM, the company behind this supercomputer, claims that it is 40% more energy efficient than standard air-cooled systems. The company further claims that the cooling system is able to remove heat 4,000 times more efficiently than air cooling systems.
