Father’s Day 2017 is just around the corner and it is time to give the dads of the world the appreciation they deserve. Father’s Day fall on different dates every year. The history of Father’s Day goes a long way but today, it is celebrated every third Sunday of June. So this year, it will be June 18, 2017.
Brief History of Father’s Day
Before we get all excited about this special holiday, it is worth taking a moment to understand why the concept of Father’s Day was created. There are different accounts on when it all started but there are two prominent ones.
on July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, a Methodist church sponsored the first event that explicitly honored fathers in a Sunday sermon. This is because of a suggestion from Grace Golden Clayton in honor of fathers who died at a deadly mine explosion that killed 362 men.
A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd came up with an idea to honor her father while listening to a sermon at Mother’s Day in 1909. She thought that mothers were getting all the credit and that fathers equally deserve a day of praise. So the next year, on June 19, 1910 Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state. She initially proposed for it to be celebrated every 5th of June but was eventually deferred to the third Sunday of June.
To understand why we’re celebrating the same day for Father’s Day 2017, it’s great to look back at these events. They celebrated it locally in several communities across the country. And in 1972, during the Nixon administration, it was officially recognized as a national holiday.
