How to Make Pasta at Home
Here are the steps on how to make pasta at the comfort of your own kitchen with just a few ingredients.
What You’ll Need
The ingredients are pretty simple. You will need:
2 cups flour and a little extra for sprinkling when rolling the pasta
Half a teaspoon of salt
3 large eggs
For the equipment, prepare:
A mixing bowl
A fork or a dough whisk
Whisk the Flour
Get your flour and your salt, and whisk them together with a fork in a medium-sized mixing bowl. This is the first step on how to make pasta.
After whisking the flour and the salt, create a deep well in the middle of the bowl of flour and salt. Crack your eggs right into that well and whisk them all with the fork or your whisk to combine everything.
Alternatively, you can use a food processor to do this.
Form the Dough
With your bowl of flour, salt, and eggs, you will start forming the dough which is an important step in how to cook pasta. When whisking the eggs with the flour, gradually pull in the flour from the bottom and the sides of the bowl. Take your time to do this and don’t rush because you need to make the dough consistent.
You will notice that the eggs will look like a slurry at first then once you’ve added enough flour, a very soft dough will form. You don’t need to use all the flour.
Knead the Dough
Now you have your pasta dough. It’s time to knead it to make your homemade pasta. Turn the pasta dough and remove any excess flour by sprinkling them on a clean counter. Start to gently fold the dough on itself. Flatten it and then fold it again. This is the fun part of how to make pasta.
At first, you will notice that your dough is extremely soft and as you keep repeating this step, it will gradually start to get firm. When it is firm enough, you can knead it. Don’t be afraid to incorporate more flour as you knead. This will prevent the pasta dough from sticking on your hands or your counter.
You will know if you have kneaded the dough enough by slicing it with a paring knife. If you see air bubbles in it, that means you have to knead it more. Once it forms a smooth elastic ball and has very little air bubbles left when cut, your dough is kneaded.
Let it Rest
Let the pasta dough rest by placing it in a bowl and covering it with a plate or plastic wrap. This will take 30 minutes.
Divide the Dough
Get your baking sheet and sprinkle it with flour. Scrape the ball of dough on top and divide it into 4 parts. Dust these portions with flour and cover them with a clean dishtowel.
Roll Out and Thin the Pasta
The next crucial step in how to make pasta is rolling it out and thinning. Using your pasta machine, flatten one piece of dough and feed it through the roller. Then change the settings to roll your pasta thinner.
The final step on how to make pasta is cutting it. Cut the long stretches into noodle-length sheets or you can shape them if you want to make filled pasta or lasagna.
