A wise man once said that whenever you see something that rises more questions that it gives answers, that something is definitely art. This being said, you don’t necessarily have to be a connoisseur to distinguish between a bad watercolor and an invaluable work of art. Furthermore, we have all heard about the huge amounts of money spent on works of art every time a high-end auction takes place, but how much is art worth anyway?
Seriously, if we were to put a price on the intrinsic value of some of the most extraordinary pieces of art in human history, how much exactly would they cost? Interestingly enough, the most iconic paintings in history have already been valued by experts throughout time, and their value is rising with each passing year. They say good wine gets better with age, so why wouldn’t artwork?
To make a long story short, here are the top 10 most valuable paintings of all time. Keep in mind that all of the items on our list have already been sold at some point, which means that we are not accounting for paintings like the ‘Mona Lisa’ which cannot be sold under penalty of law.
9Portrait de l’Artiste sans Barbe by Vincent van Gogh – $71.6 million
This self portrait shows the great Vincent van Gogh without a beard, the only such rendition of the famous artist. He painted this self portrait in the autumn of 1889 while he was in France, soon after he shaved himself apparently. Believe it or not, but when it was sold for over $70 million at an auction in New York in 1998, this self portrait became one of the most expensive paintings of all time.
